Sugar Busters Diet And When Is A Calorie Not A CalorieOkay, so when Atkins was all the rage, I was a little miffed. I knew Atkins and followed Atkins long before Atkins was on the news. But, I had never heard of the sugar busters diet. I figured it was something akin to what Atkins preached, but I wanted to know how it measured up to what I had practiced and lived for the last two years and had lovingly called my caveman diet. What was this sugarbusters? The first things the gurus at sugarbusters told me was that low fat diets don't work. Duh. Our bodies need fat to metabolize nutrients, so you're not telling me anything I don't already know. That's why, technically, we can have overweight people who are malnourished. Quite a picture, huh? The next thing they told me is that fat doesn't make you fat; sugar does. Cut the sugar to cut the fat, sugarbusters preached. Knew that already, too. Sugarbusters went on to explain how foods high in the glycemic index raise insulin levels and what the consequences of that would be. I wasn't finding anything earth shattering and then I read about what time of day to eat what and food combining and I was intrigued.
There were some clear differences between the low carb weight loss I knew and sugarbusters. Like Atkins, they had the sugar busters diet food list and several recipes. Sugar busters had a different take on fat, recommending that people be sure to limit fat intake on things like milk and cheese. Though they made mention of things like saturated fats, I couldn't quite figure out why they found it necessary to consume low fat milk and cheese and found the information to be counter to what I had learn previously. Without adequate fat, the nutrients we absorb from dairy are reduced, so it didn't make sense to me to reduce the fat in my dairy. Besides, if it isn't fat, but rather sugar that makes me fat, how did it make sense to reduce my fat intake? I never did find a satisfactory answer. Food combining theory that was mentioned in sugarbusters isn't a new idea. I have heard of the food combining thing before, but cannot claim that I knew altogether why or how eating certain things together was significant. The theory is that our bodies have to produce different enzymes to digest different kinds of foods. Combining meat with fruit is said to be the toughest, causing the pancreas to go into overdrive. Given that pancreatic cancer is one of the biggest and virulent types of cancers and one of the toughest to treat, this idea merits further attention. However, beyond the mention of food combining, not much information was offered on sugarbusters to establish their thoughts on the subject. Much of what the sugar busters diet preaches is good common sense, like moderation and exercise. The information available on their site wasn't particularly illuminating and the focus seemed to be on purchasing the company's diet book. The truth is that, whether it's the Atkins' diet plan or sugarbusters diet, the path you choose is often not as important as simply selecting path and starting the process. It's like that story of the three little frogs, sitting on the lily pad. One says to the others, "The water looks inviting. I think I'll jump in." How many frogs remain? Three because thinking about and doing are two different things. |
