Low Carb Products: Where Challenge Meets Reality

Most diets are like being newly married. We are so infatuated with the diet, we can't understand why everyone isn't on it too. We are faithful, even religious, measuring, weighing, turning our noses up at temptation. Then it happens. Whether a momentary weakness or a roving eye, we slip. We consume something we know we shouldn't have. We feel guilty and chastise ourselves, vowing to be better. But one indiscretion soon gives way to another and, before we know it, the honeymoon is over and we're not sure we want to put in the hard work of fixing everything again. No matter how committed we are to a diet (or anything else, for that matter), the true test is what happens when that diet hits the real grind of our lives. Having reasonable options and backup plans for what to do when you have to pull overtime for the third night in a row, for example, might make all the difference between success and failure. There are low-carb products and recipes available that might provide us options for making this all work.

I have been teased that I could conceivably live in my office for an entire week without leaving. Maybe. I do have a few changes of clothing in my closet and even a few extra pairs of pantyhose in my drawer. I can handle all that. What makes me crumble, however, is when hunger hits and I'm relatively unprepared. Then, it's just me and the vending machine. That's bad. And, one should never allow oneself to get in that predicament. That's where planning comes in. I know that there are commercially produced items that will serve as meal replacements. Even Atkins has protein bars and shakes.  Even though Atkins' bars taste better than some other brands, they tend to be a bit on the pricey side and, let's be honest, there comes a point when you want real food, not a bar or a shake.

The trick is to stock your office (or car) with some good low carbohydrate foods off Atkins' low carb food list that will keep and not break your budget. This can be a challenge because not all of us have refrigerators in our offices and communal areas aren't always what they're cracked up to be. Some choices are obviously better than others, but compared to the Nestle Crunch bar down the hall aren't really that bad.

It has been said that, when it comes to the Atkins' diet, bread is inherently verboten. True. Not all breads are equal however. Something must be said about the nature of the processing. The more processed or refined an item is the less nutritional value it has. The same is also true about the glycemic index (GI) level of those breads. The rougher and less processed the bread, the lower the GI. Additionally, there are several varieties of low carb bread that are produced that are lower in GI. I usually stock a few bags of unsalted, unroasted nuts as well. Almond butter is another good staple of an office desk drawer. I have often completed the drawer meal with a bag of dried cherries or strawberries.

With a little forethought and planning, you can prepare by stocking up on low carbs foods and protect yourself from diet slip ups. Low carb products don't have to taste like cardboard and sawdust. There are many options, limited only by imagination or budget, but good health can be both convenient and achievable.
